How to Prep Your Home Before a Summer Vacation

There’s nothing like the excitement of packing for a summer getaway – whether you’re headed to the mountains, the beach, or just taking a long weekend staycation. But before you leave, it’s important to take a few smart steps to prep your home so you can truly relax while you’re away.

As a Colorado homeowner (and mom), peace of mind starts at home. Here’s a simple checklist to make sure your house stays safe, secure, and stress-free while you’re enjoying some well-earned time off.


1. Secure Your Home

Before heading out of town, double-check that your home is locked up tight:

  • Lock all doors and windows (don’t forget basement or garage entries).

  • Set your security system if you have one.

  • Put lights on timers to create the appearance that someone’s home.

  • Let a trusted neighbor know you’ll be away and ask them to keep an eye out.

Bonus tip: If you have a smart doorbell or camera system, make sure it’s charged or functioning properly before you go.


2. Hold the Mail and Deliveries

Nothing says “no one’s home” like a pile of mail or packages on the front step.

Before your trip:

  • Submit a mail hold request with USPS (you can do this online).

  • Pause newspaper delivery if you still receive one.

  • Ask a friend or neighbor to grab any unexpected packages.
