Making a 22 for 2022 List

It’s that time of year when we consider what we want to accomplish in the upcoming months. The idea of new year resolutions has lost popularity in the last few years. This is mainly due to the fact that we struggle to keep our resolutions past the middle of February.

What if, instead of new year’s resolutions, you put together a list? Similar to a bucket list, it could simply be a checklist of things you’d like to do this year.

There is no need to try to implement a new habit, make a list of fun things you haven’t gotten around to yet, have wanted to accomplish for a while, or would make you happy.

The author, Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project, calls this process her 22 for 2022 list.

Here are some ideas for your 22 for 2022 list:

  • Visit a theme or water park.
  • Pick a number of books you want to read.
  • Start gardening.
  • Cook a new dish each month.
  • Hike a new trail.
  • Start that new project you’ve been thinking about.
  • Go on more date nights.
  • Meditate once a week.
  • Take a weekend trip somewhere new.
  • Start a new hobby.
  • Purchase a new appliance or piece of furniture
  • Get a massage every month.
  • Clean your garage.
  • Get a puppy.
  • Go on a road trip.
  • Start a podcast.
  • Drink more water each day.
  • Sign up for a weekend retreat.
  • Volunteer at the local animal shelter.
  • Take a class.
  • Visit the art museum.
  • Replace the hardwood floors.

Feeling overwhelmed by all the choices? You can narrow down your picks by choosing a theme for your list or break it into multiple categories. Here are some possible themes:

  • Family
  • Adventure
  • Work
  • Relationships
  • Money
  • Health
  • Fun

There are many ways to create this list and there are no rules, so get creative! Don’t worry about checking them all off – it’s not that kind of list. That level of pressure will ruin the fun of this approach. Focus on items that will make you feel happy, healthy, and creative.

Hopefully, being able to check off your list a little at a time throughout the year will be way more rewarding than giving up another new year’s resolution before March.
