Starting Your Own Herb Garden

Starting Your Own Herb Garden

Herbs are a great way to get started with gardening for those with an interest but no experience. The added benefit is that herbs can be used in the kitchen and dried for longevity. There are a lot of options when it comes to herbs and having a mini-garden in your yard including the fact that they look and smell great!

All plants need three things: sun, water, and dirt. However, any gardener will tell you that the amount of those three substances matter when it comes to growing healthy plants.

Here’s what you need to know to get started with herbs today:

How Much Sun

The majority of herbs require full sun so picking the right spot is important. You’ll want your herb garden to receive at least eight hours of direct sunlight each day. If you are planting early, keep your trees in mind. Trees provide lovely shade but that’s not what you want for your herb garden to grow.

How Much Water

Each plant will need varying amounts of water so it’s important to know, before you put them in the dirt, which herbs need more (or less) to drink. Sage is a great herb because it doesn’t require a lot of watering but you wouldn’t plant it next to Basil – which needs much more attention. Do your research before placing your herbs and it’ll make your job much easier when it comes to watering the plants.

The Right Kind of Soil

Not all dirt is the same. You’ll want a spot for your herbs that has good drainage. If your yard lacks just the right area, consider containers, pots, or raised beds instead. Organic matter, or compost, is recommended for herbs. Understanding your dirt will go a long way when it comes to ensuring your garden thrives.

If you want an even easier approach, pick out only perennial herbs. With some attention and luck, they’ll keep growing back each year. Good luck planting this year!
